The Early Settlers of Dorchester County and Their Lands

In the description of the FRONTISPIECE it is pointed out that"Nanticoke Manor" was the largest tract of land ever granted in Dorchester County. A second distinction attached to this tract was the fact that it was one of the few tracts in Dorchester County that was confiscated by the State of Maryland upon the event of the Revolutionary War.

The Maryland Legislature at its October session of 1780 adopted "An Act To Seize, Confiscate and Appropriate all British Property Within The State". This act included all property in the State belonging to British subjects; and, in addition to regular British subjects to all persons who had abandoned the State to avoid service, or upon private business, in which cases they too were considered as British subjects as were traitors to the State and other loyalists to England

Mr. Henry Hartford, the last proprietary of Maryland, was the owner of "Nanticoke Manor" and therefore the tract was confiscated by the State of Maryland

Parts of the "Manor" were sold by the State on the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd of January of 1782. Record of these sales are contained SALE BOOK OF CONFISCATED BRITISH PROPERTY 1781 - 1785, Vol. 17290 at the Hall Of Records, Annapolis, Maryland.

Some of the purchasers on that occasion were:

Henry Hooper
Clement Hollyday
James Sullivan
William Wheeland
James Shaw
George Bonwill
Richard Stanford
Michael Holland
Levin Bestpitch

Since the unsold lots in the Town of Vienna were still part of "Nanticoke Manor" these too were confiscated and sold by the State. Some of the purchasers of those Vienna lots at the sale on January of 1782 were:

Hugh W. Bryde
James Shaw
William Morgan
Ezikiel Mason
John Henry
James Gordon
John Goslin
Ann Record
Henry Ennalls
John Hicks Travers

On August of 1782 William Barrow, Dorchester County Surveyor, made a plat of the Nanticoke Manor showing the lands that had been sold as well as some other details of the tract. On the next two pages a copy of that plat is shown. The original plat as drawn to to a scale of 100 perches to an inch and to maintain that scale herein two pages were utilized rather than compressing it on one page. In the notes accompanying the original plat Mr. Barrow indicated that the Manor contained approximately 5320 acres of land of which 1518 acres appeared to be patented land. The patented land is designated by the lined areas.

More of the land was sold on July 25, 1785 and some of the purchasers on that date were:

James Stubb
John Brown
Thomas White
George Brown

Doc. Wm. Wheland
Rev. John Bowie
John Philips
Harland Hanford

Capt. Richard Waters
Salathel Fitchet
Levin Bestpitch

Vienna lots were sold on July 25, 1785 to:

Joseph Daffin
Robert Ewing
Ezikiel Mason
William Barrow
Robert Heron

John Maguire
James Shaw
Levin Lewis
John Hicks Travers
John Smoot

Archibald Pattison
Charles S. Laing
Col. Levin Winder
Adam Muir
Jacob Stayton

Earlier in this chapter it was stated that "Nanticoke Manor" was one of the few tracts in Dorchester County of British ownership that was confiscated by the Maryland authorities but while it was one of the few, it was not the only property that was confiscated.

Actually the records on confiscated properties not only for Dorchester County, but for the whole State of Maryland are very sketchy, scattered amoung many files, and in most cases incomplete. Many sales of confiscated properties are not included in THE SALE BOOK OF CONFISCATED PROPERTIES. However, the record (Vol. 17290, page 70) does show that on October 16, 1783 some land in Cambridge and at other locations in the county which had been confiscated from Anthony Steward were sold to Archibald Pattison. But from the records it would appear that the most extensive confiscation of property in Dorchester County, excepting "Nanticoke Manor", was the properties of Capt. Alexander Hamilton.

Page 37 of Vol. 17290 (SALE BOOKS OF CONFISCATED PROPERTIES) shows that Levin LeCompt purchased three tracts on September 1, 1782 that had been confiscated from Capt. Alexander Hamilton: "Ennalls Outlet", "Smart Folly", and "Hamilton's Adventure". Page 58 of the same volume records the sale on April 4, 1783 at Vienna. Md. of 19 Negro slaves, the confiscated property of Hamilton. Sales read as follows:

Page 14 of Vol. 17294 (SALE BOOKS OF CONFISCATED PROPERTIES) Records the purchase on Sept. 29, 1794 by Dr. James Murray of a Negro man called Cason Pate, the confiscated property of Capt. Alexander Hamilton of Dorchester County. (Note: The Dr. James Murray mentioned here is the same Dr. Murray who purchased parts of "Weston" which were the confiscated property of Jame Fishwick and which were not listed in the SALE BOOKS OF CONFISCATED BRITISH PROPERTY but which were recorded in the records of the Provincial Court.)

Page 15 also of Vol. 17294 records the purchases by Charles Blair of Caroline County on November 19, 1794 of the following confiscated property which belonged to Capt. Alexander Hamilton of Dorchester County:

silver tea pot
small water pot
sugar dish
