ROBERT DAFFIN Born about 1799
This is the earliest African American Daffin I have
found living in Clarke Co., Alabama. He was Robert Daffin, and
according to the 1870 Census, was born about 1799 in Georgia.
In 1870 he was living in Gainestown, Clarke Co., Alabama which is about 20 miles from Jackson where Peyton Daffin lived. Could he possibly have been Peyton's father? The others in his home in 1870 were Dolly, who I assume was his wife, age 50 years, and a daughter, Emiline, age 20. Both Dolly and Emeline were born in Alabama, so Robert must have been there for a while. In a probate case of the estate of James Daffin of Clarke Co., Alabama in 1853 there is mention of three slaves; Emit, Dolly and Ann. Whether this Dolly is the same person, I do not know. There are many more names listed with Robert Daffin's family in the 1870 census. Any comments, input or help would be appreciated. Richard Largaespada webmaster@daffin.org |
