 In 1860, Derusha Daffin of Clarke Co., Al. is shown having two slaves according to the U.S. Slave Schedule. They match the descriptions and ages for Peyton and Lizzie. Derusha was not a farmer, but the publisher of the Grove Hill Herald.

In many earlier census the ages are different, but I do not take all information given in a census, or even a death certificate, for absolute truth. I can remember a census taker in our living room sometime in the 1960’s asking my mother a bunch of these questions. Maybe a mistake was made. Also, when my mother died in the midst of having her body taken from her home I was asked many questions which I had to answer off the top of my head. Erroneous information can often be passed on. So I can not prove that Peyton and Lizzie Daffin were former slaves of Derusha Daffin, but the similarities in age and the fact that Peyton is usually described as “Mulatto” make that case, or my hunch, strong.

Peyton worked as a “ferryman” most of his life. I assume he operated some sort of ferry boat across a river or a body of water near his home in Jackson, Clarke Co., Alabama.

Here is what I have pieced together so far and any input, corrections or correspondence would be welcome as well as any photographs, etc.

First Generation ~


1. Peyton/Paton Daffin. Born in Jul 1835 in Alabama.

In 1861 when Peyton/Paton was 25, he married Lizzie Unknown, in Alabama. Born ca 1838.

They had the following children:

In 1896 when Gale was 34, he married Cora Unknown. Born ca 1873 in Alabama.

They had the following children:

Eve married Noah Hutton. Born ca 1870 in Alabama.

In 1910, Peyton Daffin is living with Noah and Eva and is still working as a Ferryman.

Jeff married Sarah Unknown. Born ca 1896.

Walter married Bertha Unknown.

7. Abbie Daffin. Born on 20 Aug 1921. Abbie died in Jackson Hospital, Jackson, Alabama, on 23 Jul 2008; she was 86. Buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Jackson, Alabama.

Abbie married Jesse Blanks. Born bef 23 Jul 2008.

They had the following children:

8. Asberry Daffin Jr. Born ca 1922 in Alabama. Asberry died in V.A. Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama, on 3 Aug 2004; he was 82. Buried in Pine Chapel No.2 Baptist Church Cemetery. Occupation: Lumber grader at Jackson Sawmill, Alabama, retired.

Asberry married Barbara Unknown.

They had the following children:

        vi.    Joann.
            Joann married Unknown Yates.

            Lives in Mobile, Alabama
